Complications of Primary Cementless Porocoated Hip Replacement Arthroplasty

Abstract
For solving the problems in the cemented hip replacement arhtroplasty, cementless hip replacement arthroplasty has become a matter of concern. However, cementless hip replacement arthroplasty has some limits. Complications of the primary
cementless
porocoated hip replacement arthroplasty were analysed in 270 hips of 218 patients that were operated upon at the department of orthopedic surgery of Seoul National University Hospital from 1986 to 1990. All cases were followed more than 2 years
with an
average of 3 years and 6 months. Both of the medical records and X-ray films were analysed in 238 cases of 186 patients. In the remaining 32 cases, only the medical records were available.
@ES The results were as follows:
1. Perioperative complications were, fracuture of proximal femur in 13(5.5%), acetabular fracture in 1(0.9%), nerve palsy in 8(3.0%), infection in 6(2.5%), and dislocation in 3(1.3%) hips.
2. Delayed complications were, heterotopic ossification in 24(10.1), loosening of femoral stem in 6(2.5%), loosening of acetabular cup in 1(0.9%), osteolysis of femur in 25(10.5%), and nonunion of the greater trochanter in 6(8.0%) hips.
3. Clinically, persitent hip pain was noted in 29 hips and thigh pain in 11 hips
